ABOUT US

HISTORY
The first Black church in Newark, St. John opened in a log cabin in 1848. St. John AM Church has been on the corner of Cleveland Avenue and New London Road for 175 years.
It was influenced by the teachings of Peter Spencer, a freed slave who founded a church in Wilmington. At the time, there were only five Black families in Newark, according to historical information kept by the church.
The log cabin burned down in 1866, and the following year, the current church building was constructed at the same site.
